Mac Brown

The pic above is one from Kona last October during the marathon while we were out on Ali'i. Mac was in the process of hunting down just about the entire men's AG field down on that day... including me.
At the time of this shot we had only met once and for only a very brief cordial exchange two days prior to the race while underneath the Zoot shoe tent. The day after the race we had a similar passing whilst at Lava Java. He ended up 2nd in the M25-29's on the day and got a coveted Umeke bowl for his efforts.
A couple weeks after Kona I received an email from Mac. We continued to keep the correspondence up throughtout the winter and it was fun to have someone going through the same trials of going pro as I was. Step for step. Whereas I was unsure of my pro decision because of my run, likewise Mac had the same thoughts because of his swim. In the end I decided to go pro becuase this-is-what-I-want-to-do. I don't think I'd be far off saying that this was the same reason that Mac decided to go pro as well. Also... being pro means having no weakness... and that little card that says "Elite" on it is very good motivation for dedicating yourself to working on something that needs improving. Swim/Run.
In mid-March I made my way down to San Diego for some work with Xterra but also to see what SD was all about in regards to tri (my Ralph's trips over the years were simply too quick). Once in town I met up with Mac and we started getting some training in together. A few great training rides, swims, good dinners, racing, partying and of course a good bit of Golden Spoon later it was a great two weeks of getting to know Mac.

As I delve into my first season of racing professionaly it's good to know that I have a partner in crime for this operation. Anytime I feel uncertain about something I'll give Mac a buzz. He's been generous to hear me out and his advice is always highly valued.
Look for Mac to be cleaning up and shooting for a return to Kona when he toes the line at IM Lake Placid in less than three weeks.

Great post Mark. You and Mac are both going for it and I love it! There aren't two guys (of course I am Beth's number 1 fan!) I am rooting for more than you two! I know you will both succeed!

now... get back to SD for some more whole foods and golden spoon!

Great post Mark,
I admire the step that you and Mac took this season. I'm a bit behind the two of you fellas but I have had thoughts of making the leap at some point...this season was supposed to be a bit of a springboard but life happened! In any case, I'm a big fan of the way you guys approach the sport as a profession and wish you all the best.
Looking forward to a reunion in Kona at some point.
Cheers, Ian

Great post - Mac's a top notch guy.
And at least he passed you on the run. .. I've never had that luxury yet.
It takes balls to take the tough route, and i admire that about both you guys. The results will come ..
