5430 Boulder Sprint Coverage in Daily Camera

BOULDER, Colo. — A total of 286 people participated in their first triathlon on Sunday at the Boulder Reservoir.
The 5430 Sprint Triathlon was Mark Van Akkeren's second triathlon of the weekend.
Van Akkeren, the defending champion, finished second to Simon Thompson. On Saturday, he competed in the Lake to Lake Triathlon in Loveland, where he finished second to fellow Boulder triathlete Justin Daerr. Fairview cross country coach Teri Cady won the women's race with a time of 1:18:07.
"It's looking like two runner-up finishes for the weekend, which is not too bad," Van Akkeren said after completing Sunday's half-mile swim, 17-mile bike and 3.1-mile run with a time of 1:10:08. "But we always want better."Van Akkeren was second overall in the swim (9:49) and bike (39:12) legs and had about a 44-second lead on Thompson entering the run. But the Australian Olympian dominated the final leg with a time of 17:23 to break the tape comfortably ahead of Van Akkeren, who finished 17th in the run (19:09).
"I had nothing on the bike, no power, and I just couldn't stay with Mark at all," Thompson said. "But I got off the bike and I was like, 'Oh, well that feels good.'
"And I just went with it. I found my rhythm quickly and enjoyed the run."
Mark Dvorak (1:10:59) finished third and was closing fast on his run (17:52).
Van Akkeren, who won last year's 5430 Sprint by less then a minute over runner-up Eric Peterson, didn't use fatigue as an excuse. He said some poor transitioning was as much to blame as Thompson's final kick.
"I came out of the water and struggled with my wet suit, and by the time I got on my bike, pretty much all of my swim lead had evaporated," Van Akkeren said. "I gave it all I had (on the bike) and had about a 44-second lead. I knew it wouldn't be enough to hold him off."
Still, finishing second to one of the world's top triathletes isn't anything to be ashamed of. Especially just 24 hours after competing in a triathlon that included a 1.5K swim, 30-mile bike and 10K run.
"It just adds a whole different level to the event," Van Akkeren said of having Thompson in the field.
Thompson finished 10th in triathlon at the 2004 Olympics and won the Australian long course title in 2005. He will try to defend his 5430 Long Course title on Aug. 9 and is thinking about entering the Boulder Peak Triathlon on July 12.
"It might be fun to try and get all three," Thompson said. "We'll see."
