Quiet

Sitting on the sidelines these last two year's has provided me with some time to observe and reflect on the qualities of good coaches. For one, the very best coaches are not the ones you may know of. You never hear of them yet you do hear of their athletes' exploits. Rather they motor along doing their own thing with no need to trumpet their own horn. I find these types to be the ones that I, as both athlete and coach, wish to learn from. Very rarely do they write articles even less so do they frequent internet boards. The really good coaches aren't in the limelight. Now time to go find these loud minds and to learn from them.

Got Bowl?

I've been thinking of writing some little stories about a few of the MVA Racing athletes that had the chance to race Kona this year but seeing this photo from Steve really jump started that process. After only a few months of working together I put it out there that I thought that he could get on the podium in Kona in 2012. Fast forward to the day after Coure d'Alene this year and I get an email: "How about a wooden bowl." Referring to the umeke bowls that are given out for those in the top 5 in their respective age groups at Kona. My response: all my chips are in. He put it out there, he busted his ass, he got after it. This photo just sums up so much of what I've seen him work towards. But it's not just this goal and the successful accomplishment of it that has me inspired but rather I've been inspired to be a better coach when any of my athletes attack a goal in a similar way to Steve's attack on Kona. To see them set goals, then get after them and in the end conquer it inspires me to be a better coach. It drives me to want more out of myself as an instructor and guide. To keep setting the bar higher and to keep getting after it.

Nice work amigo.
